Why business travellers are choosing helicopters over cars

Business travel by helicopter is no longer an indulgence. For routes inside the UK under 200 miles, it routinely returns time at a cost-per-hour that compares favourably to the chargeable hourly rate of the people travelling.

We move executive teams between London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cambridge and regional offices every working week. Here is the maths.

Worked example: a 9am board meeting in central Manchester for four directors based in central London.

• **Train**: leave London 06:00, arrive Manchester Piccadilly 08:15, taxi to office 08:45. Total elapsed: 2hr 45m one-way, 5hr+ same-day return.
• **Drive**: leave 04:30, arrive 09:00 on a clean morning, more like 10:00 on a bad one. Same-day return is brutal.
• **Private jet**: London City to Manchester is 35 minutes flying, but adds two airport transfers and a security buffer. Total elapsed: ~2hr 30m one-way.
• **Helicopter charter**: leave Battersea 07:55, land Manchester city centre 08:55, walk to meeting. Total elapsed: 1hr 10m one-way, 4 hours same-day return.

For four people, the helicopter saves four × 3 hours = 12 person-hours each way. If those four people charge at £400/hour internally, the time savings alone return £9,600 against an ~£18,500 round-trip cost.

The cabin of a modern executive twin is quieter than people expect. A H145 or A109 cruise is conversational with headsets, and many of our regular business clients run pre-meeting briefings in the cabin. The 65-minute Manchester leg becomes a working hour, not a dead hour.

Compare to: a 2hr 15m train where you fight for a desk, a 4-hour drive where you cannot work at all, or a private jet flight where 25 of the 35 minutes are at high workload (taxi, takeoff, climb, descent).

The wrong framing: "the helicopter cost £18,500". The right framing: "the helicopter returned 12 person-hours and made the meeting possible the same day". The cost per chargeable hour returned is often lower than the cost of the senior executive's chargeable hour internally.

Not every business trip should be a helicopter:

• Single passenger short-distance: rarely worth it on cost per seat.
• Routes over 250 miles inside the UK: jet plus transfers usually wins.
• Flexible meetings where time is not constrained: train works.
• Weather-marginal days in winter: even a twin-engine IFR helicopter can lose to a hard-IMC weather front.
