Flying to Silverstone by helicopter

Of all the dates on the British motorsport calendar, none generates more helicopter movements than Silverstone's Grand Prix weekend. A practical guide to arriving at the circuit by air — routes, aircraft, on-site landing and what booking actually looks like.

Of all the dates on the British motorsport calendar, none generates more helicopter movements than Silverstone's Grand Prix weekend. The on-site helicopter park handles hundreds of arrivals across the three days — a working solution to a problem that road infrastructure has never quite solved. The M40 fills up by Friday lunchtime, the A43 by Saturday morning, and on race day itself the queues into the public car parks can run to several hours. From Battersea, the same journey takes about thirty minutes block to block.

§ A / THE PROBLEM

Why fly to Silverstone

Silverstone Circuit sits roughly between Northampton and Brackley, in an area of Northamptonshire that was never designed to absorb 150,000 spectators across a weekend. The roads in are A-roads through farmland — single carriageway, a handful of small villages, almost no parallel routes. When the British GP attendance climbs, the network simply runs out of capacity. The result is queues that begin twenty miles from the circuit and don't dissolve until well after the chequered flag.

Helicopter charter for race weekend is not just for hospitality boxes and team principals. A material proportion of the movements are private clients with paddock or grandstand tickets who have done the maths and decided the air option is the only way to reach the circuit before the formation lap.

§ B / THE PAD

The Silverstone helicopter park

Silverstone has a dedicated, licensed helicopter landing area inside the circuit perimeter — the helicopter park — operated under temporary licence by the event's heliservices coordinator. During GP weekend, it sees movements every couple of minutes through the morning, marshalled by a ground team and managed by ATC. The walk from the pad to the paddock and grandstands is around five to ten minutes, depending on which side of the circuit your ticket sits.

Outside of major events — for the BTCC weekend, MotoGP, classic days and private track hire — the same pad is available but with a much quieter operational tempo. The booking process is the same; the prices and lead times are kinder.

§ C / THE JOURNEY

Routes and journey times

Silverstone is approximately 65 nautical miles from central London. In a modern executive twin, that translates into:

  • Battersea Heliport (EGLW) → Silverstone: 28–32 minutes block to block.
  • London Biggin Hill → Silverstone: 30–35 minutes.
  • Farnborough → Silverstone: 25–28 minutes.
  • Manchester → Silverstone: 50–60 minutes.
  • Birmingham → Silverstone: 12–15 minutes.

For most clients flying from London, Battersea is the obvious departure point. It is central, licensed for evening operations and has the FBO handling that makes the morning of a race day calm rather than chaotic.

§ D / AIRCRAFT

Which aircraft

Three airframes do most of the Silverstone work in the UK charter market:

  • Agusta A109 Power and Grand SP — the default for parties of four to six. Fast, refined and the easiest aircraft to slot into the busy GP weekend pad cadence.
  • Eurocopter AS355 Twin Squirrel — the economy twin for four to five passengers. Less polished inside but a meaningful cost saving for shorter trips.
  • Airbus H145 — the heavy twin for parties up to eight, or where the brief involves an overnight stay and a heavier baggage load.

§ E / BOOKING

Booking — and why lead time matters

Outside of GP weekend, Silverstone charter is normally bookable inside 48 hours. The British Grand Prix is the exception. Pad slots are allocated by the heliservices operator and sell out — every year — weeks in advance. By the time the Friday practice begins, there is rarely a slot left to be had at any price.

If your brief is GP weekend, the practical advice is to book by mid-May at the latest. Six to eight weeks is comfortable; three weeks ahead is workable but tight; under two weeks is when the answer is usually 'sorry'.

The single biggest difference between a calm GP morning and a frantic one is whether the heli slot was booked early. Lock the date as soon as you have your tickets.

§ F / COST

Indicative pricing

A return Battersea-to-Silverstone day for six guests on an Agusta A109 Grand SP typically lands in the £13,000–£16,000 region all-in, including positioning, fuel surcharge, landing fees and waiting time. Twin Squirrel rates run roughly 25 per cent below that; H145 about a third above. Send us the date, the party size and the departure point — we'll come back the same business day with a quote, the aircraft options and the pad slot status.
