The ultimate guide to helicopter flights for major UK events

Royal Ascot, the British Grand Prix, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Cheltenham Festival, The Open, Wimbledon, Henley — when to book, what it costs, how it works.

9 min readBy Charter-A Operations

The UK summer season runs on helicopter charter. Between March and September, every major sporting and cultural event in the calendar uses helicopters as part of how the high-spend ticket holders actually get there.

This guide covers the eight events we fly to most often — what it costs, when to book, where you land. For each one, click through to the event page for full operational detail.

§ 01 / NATIONAL HUNT

Cheltenham Festival (March)

Four-day National Hunt festival. Helicopter movements peak on Gold Cup Friday. Cheltenham Festival event details.

  • Day return from London on the Agusta A109: ~£15,500 for six pax.
  • Book six weeks ahead for Gold Cup Friday — Wednesday and Thursday are easier.
  • Landing on-site at the racecourse, walk to the enclosure.

§ 02 / ROYAL ENCLOSURE

Royal Ascot (June)

Five-day flat racing meeting and the social high point of the racing year. Royal Ascot event details.

  • Day return from London on the A109: ~£12,000 for six pax.
  • Ladies Day (Thursday) and Gold Cup Day (Thursday) sell out first.
  • Often combined with Henley Regatta the same week.

§ 03 / FESTIVAL

Glastonbury Festival (June)

The traffic into Worthy Farm is famously punishing. Helicopter charter to the licensed landing site adjacent to the festival sidesteps the entire problem. Glastonbury event details.

  • London to Glastonbury on the Airbus H145: ~£18,000 single one-way, eight pax.
  • Used by artists, hospitality and private parties — book six to eight weeks ahead.

§ 04 / FESTIVAL

Isle of Wight Festival (June)

Twenty minutes from the mainland by helicopter — no Solent ferry queues. Isle of Wight Festival event details.

  • London to Newport day return, six pax, A109: ~£15,200.
  • Routinely combined with the South Coast / Cowes Week for a long-weekend programme.

§ 05 / TENNIS

Wimbledon Championships (June–July)

Wimbledon doesn't have an on-site landing strip, so the route lands at Battersea or a nearby Surrey/SW London base plus a short car transfer to SW19.

  • Battersea base + car to Wimbledon, six pax, A109: ~£6,200 outbound.
  • Finals weekend slots sell out three weeks ahead.

§ 06 / ROWING

Henley Royal Regatta (July)

Five days of rowing on the Thames, hospitality boxes pitched along the bank. Helicopter landing strip a short walk from the Stewards' Enclosure.

  • Day return from London on the A109: ~£11,800 for six pax.
  • Henley Sunday is the peak day.

§ 07 / FORMULA 1

British Grand Prix (July)

The single most-flown UK helicopter weekend of the year. Race-day Sunday sees over 200 helicopter movements at Silverstone.

  • Day return from London on the A109: ~£13,500 for six pax.
  • Sunday peak — landing slots sell out by April most years. Saturday qualifying is the easier book.
  • Silverstone's on-site helicopter pad puts you in the paddock minutes after touchdown.

§ 08 / MOTORSPORT

Goodwood Festival of Speed (July)

The summer's biggest UK motorsport gathering, and one of our peak weeks of the year. Goodwood Festival of Speed event details.

  • Day return from London on the A109: ~£14,000 for six pax.
  • Saturday and Sunday peak — book three to four weeks out.
  • Same destination for the more vintage Goodwood Revival in September — slightly lower demand.

§ B / TIMING

Booking windows by event

If you take one thing from this guide: peak-event days at every venue above need to be booked weeks in advance. Indicative lead times for the popular days:

  • Cheltenham Gold Cup Friday: 8+ weeks.
  • Royal Ascot Ladies/Gold Cup Day: 6 weeks.
  • Silverstone Sunday: 8 weeks. Saturday: 4 weeks.
  • Goodwood Festival of Speed Saturday/Sunday: 4 weeks.
  • Wimbledon Finals weekend: 4 weeks.
  • Glastonbury / Isle of Wight: 6–8 weeks.

Same-day and 24-hour charter is regularly possible for less popular days at all of these events. For the broader picture of when UK helicopter prices peak, see our charter season article.

Single charter, shuttle programme, hospitality block — we run all three at every event above. Send the brief with date and party size and we'll come back with options. See also the full events index for the rest of the calendar.
