Blue and white Eurocopter AS355 Twin Squirrel hovering over the lawn of a UK country estate — typical event charter operating environment
BRIEFING · PRICING

What determines the cost of a helicopter charter?

The five inputs that drive UK helicopter charter pricing — aircraft type, flight time, landing fees, positioning and passenger numbers — explained simply.

5 min readBy Charter-A Operations

Helicopter charter pricing has more variables than most people expect. Get a quote for the same route from two operators and the numbers can look very different — usually because one or both of them is being selective about what is included.

There are five real inputs. Understand these and you can read any quote correctly and compare apples to apples.

§ 01 / AIRCRAFT

1. Aircraft type

The single biggest variable. UK twin-engine hourly rates for 2026:

Picking the right type for the party size is the easiest way to control cost. Eight passengers on an AS355 means a second aircraft (double the cost). Three passengers on an H145 is paying for seats you don't need. Match the aircraft to the brief.

§ 02 / TIME

2. Flight time

Helicopter charter is priced per flying hour, not per route. London to Silverstone at 25 minutes each way bills as one hour (the minimum), plus a small contingency for taxi and approach. London to Manchester at 65 minutes each way bills as 2hr 15m total for a day-return including approach.

Hourly billing is wheels-up to wheels-down. If you fly there in 25 minutes and stay for four hours, the four hours of hold is billed separately (and at a much lower rate than the flying time).

§ 03 / FEES

3. Landing fees

Every commercial landing in the UK has a fee. Range:

Two-leg trips have two landing fees plus an outbound positioning fee — see point 4.

§ 04 / POSITIONING

4. Positioning flights

Helicopters do not live where you live. If the aircraft is based at Redhill and you're flying from Battersea, the cost of bringing it to Battersea (and returning it after) is positioning.

Positioning is usually 30–60 minutes of empty flying. On the A109 that is £1,800–£3,600 added to the trip — sometimes a third of the total cost on shorter routes.

This is why a 25-minute Battersea-Silverstone flight does not cost £1,500. It costs around £13,500 because of the positioning on both sides.

§ 05 / SEATS

5. Passenger numbers

Helicopter charter is priced per aircraft, not per seat. Total cost is the same for one passenger or six. Add one extra passenger and the cost per seat drops; six passengers on an A109 brings the per-seat cost to about a third of the total.

This is why we always ask about party size first. Eight people on the H145 often costs less per seat than four people on the AS355, despite the higher hourly rate — see worked examples in our cheaper than you think article.

§ B / FALSE INPUTS

What is NOT a real cost driver

Three things people often think drive cost — but mostly don't:

  • **Time of day** — early or late within a duty day, no difference. Night operations add a marginal premium for IFR-equipped twins.
  • **Day of week** — weekend events command premium dates because of demand, but pure Saturday-vs-Tuesday is no cost difference at the operator level.
  • **Refreshments / VIP service** — included as standard on the executive twins. We don't charge separately for tea, coffee or sparkling water.

Get any quote that gives you a single figure — without explaining the breakdown above — and ask for itemisation. The transparent ones become obvious. The opaque ones reveal themselves. For full context see our 2026 prices guide or request a written quote.
